The Peace Corps Prep program is structured around four core competencies identified by host countries as qualities they most value in Peace Corps Volunteers. These same competencies are critical for international service careers with other organizations.
More specific details about program requirements can be found in the Clark Peace Corps Prep Student Guide.
Training and experience in a specific work sector
Relevant knowledge and practical skills are central to international service. Peace Corps Prep participants take courses and gain experience in one of six focus areas that align with the Peace Corps sectors.
- Take three courses related to your chosen sector.
- Accumulate a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer or paid work experience in the same sector.
Language skills
International service often requires interacting professionally in a language other than English. Minimum requirements for language courses depend on the region where you intend to serve.
- Latin America: intermediate proficiency in Spanish
- West Africa: proficiency in French or another Romance language
- Everywhere else: no explicit requirement, but participants are encouraged to study another language
Intercultural competence
Engaging thoughtfully and fluidly across cultures begins with one’s own self-awareness. A combination of coursework and intercultural experiences in which you learn about others will deepen your cultural agility.
- Take one core introspective diversity and inclusion course at Clark
- Take two additional electives, study or volunteer abroad in a country that has hosted Peace Corps, or participate in immersive intercultural experiences in the US.
Professional and leadership development
International service organizations are highly professional and selective. Peace Corps Prep includes three activities to bolster your career prospects:
- Resume critique
- Workshop on interview skills
- Leadership experience
Students must graduate in good academic standing in order to receive their Certificate of Completion from the Peace Corps.
