Massachusetts colleges and universities cluttered the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings earning spots as some of the top schools in the nation.
The report divided schools into two groups: national universities and liberal arts colleges. Nine national universities ranked within the top 100, including seven in the top 50. Harvard University ranked the highest at No. 2. Seven schools ranked within the top 100 in liberal arts. Three institutions ranked within the top 4 of liberal arts colleges.
Williams College in Williamstown grabbed the top spot among liberal arts colleges with Amherst College coming in second and Wellesley College ranking fourth. Smith College (15), Mouth Holyoke (34), the College of the Holy Cross (36) and Wheaton College also finished within the top 100 among liberal arts colleges.
Nationally, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology each finished within the top 5. Harvard finished behind Princeton, which ranked No. 1. MIT ranked fourth.
Tufts University (30), Boston College (35), Boston University (42), Brandeis University (42) and Northeastern University (49) rounded out the top 50.
The University of Massachusetts Amherst and Worcester Polytechnic Institute shared the spot at No. 66. Clark University in Worcester fell just outside the top 100 at spot No. 103.
Massachusetts joined California (Stanford and California Institute of Technology) and Illinois (University of Chicago and Northwestern) as the only states with two schools in the top 10. California placed 10 national universities in the top 50.
