Sherry Freyermuth

Sherry Freyermuth is a published, award-winning graphic designer with experience working for large corporate brands and non-profit initiatives. She currently is an Assistant Professor of Studio Art at Clark University in Worcester, MA.

Sherry has been teaching hand lettering and typography for over a decade and presented research on it at numerous academic conferences including SECAC, AIGA National Conference, and CAA and published her research in Plot(s) Journal of Design Studies and as an open-source teaching resource.

Her most recent book, Surviving the Creative Space: Teamwork Techniques for Designers was published by Bloomsbury in October 2022. In the book, Sherry provides candid interviews and case studies from large multinationals—including IBM, OH Partners and CitiBike—to smaller firms and start-ups. She presents emerging designers a realistic picture of the design field today, and provides inspiration and guidance on how designers around world have overcome challenges and utilized the benefits of working in teams.

Sherry has been awarded a Clark University Higgins School of Humanities grant as well as a one semester sabbatical to support her current research about hand lettering history and practice. She plans to visit numerous archives including the Letterform Archive and the RIT Graphic Design Archive in 2023 and 2024.

Sherry came to Clark University in 2020 with eight years of university level teaching experience. In 2016, she had the honor of receiving a Lamar University Presidential Fellowship Award to complete a new curriculum in design thinking and user experience design, which included a student trip to Austin, TX to complete a design thinking at the IBM Studios offices. She also received the distinction of being named a Lamar University Distinguished Faculty Fellow in 2018. She has taught all levels of graphic design including topics in typography, brand identity, history of graphic design, web design, and user experience design.
