Part of the 2023-2024 LLC Speaker Series
It is becoming more common to see Spanish women who premiere films, collect awards, or receive ovations for their works at international film festivals. However, the contemporary film industry remains dominated by men. The faces of actresses appear in magazines, screens, and advertising posters, but except for professionals in the field, who could recognize a women filmmaker, sound engineer, editor, or cinematographer? Óscar Fernández Orengo, a photographer specialized in portraying filmmakers, reveals those faces to us, bringing them closer without artifice, and with his usual sense of light and composition. In his contribution to the LL&C Speaker’s series, he will explain the genesis of “La mirada horizontal” (“The horizontal gaze”), a series of 26 portraits of women in the film industry. Óscar Fernández Orengo will also reflect on his experience as a portrait photographer, and the power of a photo as a vehicle of both individual and collective discovery.
Co-sponsored by the International Conference of Hispanic Women Filmmakers (CIMCiH), the Department of Language, Literature & Culture, Higgins School of Humanities.
