Older Jews and the Holocaust is a project dedicated to uncovering the often-overlooked experiences of elderly Jews during and after the Holocaust. While many were tragically murdered, some survived and rebuilt their lives. This project moves beyond the conventional focus on their vulnerability and loss, instead highlighting the resilience and continuity of their prewar lives through the horrors of Nazi persecution and into the postwar period. It examines how they coped with trauma and how families, communities, and organizations responded to their unique needs.
This project is undertaken with assistance from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, supported by the German Federal Ministry of Finance and the Foundation Remembrance, Responsibility and Future, as well as the Ernest Hecht Charitable Foundation. A volume by the same title will be co-published by Wayne State University Press and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in spring 2026.
