Hinge is a quartet made up of Philipp Stäudlin (saxophones), Dan VanHassel (electric guitar), Matt Sharrock (percussion), and Keith Kirchoff (piano). Lying somewhere between a classical chamber ensemble and a rock band, Hinge presents programs combining cutting-edge contemporary and experimental music, seamless multimedia integration, and the innovative re-imagining of rock and pop songs. Join us in Razzo Hall on March 18th at 8:00pm to hear the Hinge Ensemble rock the stage!
Hinge Presents: “Talk Around It”
This program features music that explores ideas of identity, conflict, freedom, and communication, including the world premieres of Hinge commissions by Yoon-Ji Lee and Kirsten Carey.
Yoon-Ji Lee’s Migration is a powerful depiction of her difficulties in navigating the American immigration system, and of her evolving hybrid identity as both a Korean and an American. In Talk Around It by Detroit-based guitarist and composer Kirsten Carey, the ensemble dramatizes a familial conflict, mirroring the tensions and disagreements that can occur when people refuse to listen to each other. Composer and live electronics performer Sam Pluta has spoken of finding personal artistic liberation through his experience with Japanese modern art, inspiring him to build musical structures out of contrasting “blocks” of sound in his bracing work American Tokyo Daydream IV. Finally we present our arrangement of Julius Eastman’s monumental Gay Guerrilla, Eastman’s battle hymn of liberation, a battle that we continue to fight today.
Please note: this performance is open to the public! Audience members must be vaccinated and masked at all times. No food or drink is permitted.
