Roots of the Bosnian Genocide

Speaker: Hikmet Karčić (Institute for Research of Crimes against Humanity and International Law, University of Sarajevo)

Between 1992 and 1995, Bosnian Serb forces humiliated, sexually abused, tortured, and killed Bosnian Muslims and Croats in a widespread, systematic way as part of the armed conflicts occurring across the former Yugoslavia. Bosnian Serb-built concentration camps provided an ideal setting for its forces to carry out these mass atrocities — the goal was to produce so much physical and psychological trauma as possible to deter non-Serbs from ever returning to the area. Karčić explains how and why the camps functioned as an effective tool for the internationally condemned ethnoreligious genocidal campaign against non-Serb populations.
