Conifer forest resilience to changing climate and fire regimes in the western US
The combination of increasing area burned at high severity and warmer, drier post-fire conditions is making forests in the western United States vulnerable to ecological transformation. Dr. Kimberley Davis will examine how the interactive impacts of changing climate and wildfire activity are altering the ability of western conifer forests to recover following wildfire and then discuss management options for promoting post-fire forest recovery. Results from a large collaborative synthesis of post-fire conifer recovery suggest that climate conditions are increasingly limiting post-fire conifer regeneration across many parts of the western US. Climate limitations to regeneration combined with high-severity fire can increase the likelihood of post-fire vegetation change. The Resist-Accept-Direct (RAD) framework provides a clear decision space for managing post-fire vegetation transitions. Dr. Davis will discuss pre- and post-fire management options in fire-prone mixed conifer forests of the western US through the lens of the RAD framework.
