Sexual Violence in Russia’s War against Ukraine: Nature, Effects and Responses

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, Ukrainian and international human rights organizations have documented violations against civilians in Russia-controlled areas, including rape and other forms of sexual violence. The victims and survivors of sexual assaults by the Russian military are women and girls, men and boys, civilians and military personnel, and heterosexual and homosexual children, adults and the elderly.
What are the causes, patterns, and consequences of sexual violence in Russia’s war on Ukraine? How do Russia’s toxic masculinity, militarized culture, and state homophobia contribute to war crimes of a sexual nature? How has Russo-Ukrainian sexual violence shaped our understanding of the nature of wartime rape? What are the effects of sexual violence on victims/survivors, their family members, and their communities?
