Photographer David Krooshof studied sociology at the Radboud University Nijmegen and Sonology at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, Netherlands. He has spent 23 years now at the Academy for Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam, David is an instructor, tech director, composer, musician, and mentor. Parallel to his duties at the academy, Krooshof is also an accomplished photographer.
Sonology, the study of sound, has a profound influence on Krooshof’s art. His research with birds in flight during the day comes by way of his acute hearing. Once this is established Krooshof will set up his camera to record the cadence created through time-lapse photography defined as chronophotography. His most recent explorations utilize sound-detecting equipment in the absence of light, to gather information to pinpoint the habitual flight of bats.
Set against the backdrop of Amsterdam, Hilversum, and The Hague, Krooshof’s photographs disclose evidence that these creatures are bound to fly in formation, massing together to stitch patterns across the sky. Krooshof’s attention to aesthetics skillfully combines this technology to create a bold and dramatic series of sublime photographs.
