The Sociology Department stands firm in its commitment to combat racism at Clark and the world beyond our university community. We recognize the extent of systemic racism in higher education and society at large and affirm the American Sociological Association’s statement that as “scholars and citizens, we have a responsibility to study and speak out regarding all forms of racism and injustice.” We commit to the following:
- Support and mentor BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) students in pursuing excellence at Clark and in their careers after Clark
- Recruit, hire, promote, and retain BIPOC faculty
- Create course content and pedagogy that is anti-racist and that highlights race, inequality, diversity and intersectionality
- Engage all of our students in the study of how structural forces create and perpetuate systemic racism
- Engage in action-oriented dialogue on how to advance diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice at Clark, the broader Worcester community, and beyond
