May Day (1938)

Accession Number:  2022.02.4.6

Historical background: The Day of National Labor – also known as May Day – was declared a national holiday on May 1, 1933 as a way for the Nazi Party to gain the support of German workers.  All Labor Day celebrations were organized by the government and any celebrations from other groups were banned.  Labor Day is still celebrated in Germany today, but has become a day of violent riots and protests.
