Historical background:  Wittenberg is about 70 miles southwest of Berlin. Wittenberg is famous for its connection to religious reformer Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. Many buildings in Wittenberg are associated with the Protestant Reformation. Unlike other historic German cities during World War II, Wittenberg was mostly spared from destruction due to its religious history. Fighting still occurred in the town and near the end of WWII, the Allied forces bombed the Arado Flugzeugwerke (Arado Aircraft Factory) that produced aircraft parts for the Nazi Party.  Approximately one thousand workers died in the attack.
