Historical background: The old market place and town hall were the central points of Frankfurt am Main. The Justica Fountain was erected in 1543 in the center of the marketplace. The old marketplace was a place of public rejoicing. The old town hall in Frankfurt was an example of the gothic half-timbered architecture and consisted of a group of 12 separate houses. The Haus zum Römer, the house of Romans, has been used as the town hall for over 600 years since 1405. The old town hall in Frankfurt was bombed by the Allied forces and destroyed during WWII along with the rest of the old town. This postcard was one in a series of 144 picture postcards published from March to June 1934.
