The origins of TerrSet lie with the development of the IDRISI GIS and Image Processing system in 1987 by Emeritus Professor J. Ron Eastman. It was named after the historical cartographer Muhammad al-Idrisi to honor his orientation towards collaborative works in geography. Providing an open architecture and intentionally accesible data structures, the system was intended to facilitate collaboration in the development of GIS. Over the years, TerrSet has undergone continuous development by the Clark Labs team at Clark University. The latest version, TerrSet 2020 Geospatial Monitoring and Modeling software, maintains the project’s commitment to scientific rigor and relevance. Since 2024 with the merger of Clark Labs and the Clark CGA, the development and maintenance of TerrSet has moved to Clark CGA.
