Meet Some ES&P Interns

Suela John (ES&P/BA 2010) is working on an academic internship with ES&P professor Tim Downs. We are using indoor environmental testing to learn more about the communities at risk in the Main South and Piedmont neighborhoods. The internship is focused on indoor environmental sampling and I am a research assistant.

Stephanie L. Oleksyk (ES&P/BA/MA ‘08) is currently an intern at Corporate Environmental Advisors of West Boylston, writing a release abatement measure plan (RAM) for a former liquid waste dump in Leicester, MA. This paper will be submitted to DEP before a voluntary clean-up of the site.

Laura Merner (ES&P/BA ‘08) received a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) fellowship from the National Science Foundation to work on integrated watershed sciences at the University of Texas in Austin. Through this experience she also had the opportunity to go to Mexico for a week and conduct in-situ water quality analysis. Next, Laura plans to return to Austin to intern at the Center for Environmental Research where she will be conducting an independent study revolving around riparian zone ecology and water quality/quantity. As part of the internship I will also be working with a youth river watch program which works to raise awareness about the environment, promote environmental studies, and help motivate ‘at-risk’ youth to complete their education.

Laura Brentner (ES&P/BA ‘02) conducted research on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) at the University of Massachusetts. This system, based in agroecology, was used to help apple farmers in Massachusetts monitor pests and implement controlled spraying of crops. Such research has enabled UMASS and local farmers to develop new pest management strategies that have resulted in a significant decrease in pesticide use across Massachusetts.

Jamie Salo (ES&P/BA ‘02) interned with the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES), where he researched and created dossiers for businesses, NGOs and foundations; facilitated group discussions; and helped edit grant proposals.

Ethan Moore (ES&P/BA ‘02) interned with WasteCap of Massachusetts, an agency funded by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), with the purpose of researching composting programs at Stop & Shop Supermarkets. He consequently developed a standardized set of criteria for initiating composting programs. His proposals are currently being used by the DEP for future organic waste management plans.

Charles Clark(ES&P/BA ‘02) worked as an environmental technician for Handex Environmental of New England, an environmental engineering and consulting firm. His job was to assure that sites connected with SUNOCO Oil Company were in compliance.

Jeremy Child (ES&P/BA ‘02) worked for National Grid/ Massachusetts Electric Company, New England headquarters, in their Environmental Department.

Julie St. Francis (ES&P/BA ‘02) interned with WasteCap of Massachusetts and was stationed at Genzyme Corporation in Framingham, Massachusetts, where she helped its Environmental Department begin to implement a voluntary EPA program known as WasteWise, aimed at helping organizations reduce solid waste. Her work will assist the Environmental Department in their annual environmental performance reporting.

Casey Burns (ES&P/BA/MA ‘02) worked with Earthwatch on river/estuarian restoration on the mouth of the Skagit River in Puget Sound in Washington as part of a project funded by a Watershed Research Fellowship.

Jared Markham (ES&P/BA ‘01) interned for the GZA environmental firm in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he worked to develop a database for assessment and cleanup of hazardous waste sites in Central Massachusetts.

Taylor Young (ES&P/BA ‘01) interned with Sepracor, Inc., a pharmaceutical company in Marlborough, Massachusetts. As a clinical data manager, he collected, analyzed, and managed data from clinical trials of new drugs. In this work he utilized his knowledge from two Clark courses: Environmental Toxicology & Cancer and Science & Society.
