Men's Basketball Falls to Trinity, 86-75
WORCESTER, MASS. 2/9/09 - The Trinity College Bantams used a balanced attack to post an 86-75 non-conference victory over Clark University in a men's basketball game held at the Kneller Athletic Center on Monday night.
The Bantams (8-13) had five players score in double figures. Sophomore Luke MacDougall (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had 20 points; sophomore Ian Fels (Miami, Fla.) added 16 points; sophomore Jared Pimm (Chelmsford, Mass.) contributed with 13 points; senior Aaron Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland) registered 12 points, and sophomore Timothy Dunn (Holyoke, Mass.) finished with 11 points.
Junior Mark Alexander (Providence, R.I.) and freshman Brian Vayda (Sturbridge, Mass.) led Clark (10-12) with 21 points apiece. Senior Peter Normandin (Westminster, Mass.) finished with 18 points. Vayda pulled down 11 rebounds to record his fourth double-double of the year.
Clark pulled out in the lead in the first 11 minutes of the game. Alexander's long-range three gave the Cougars their largest advantage (18-10) of the half at 14:15. But the Bantams battled back using a 14-4 run over a 6:01 span to take its first lead (24-22) of the night. MacDougall scored the final six points during the stretch.
Normandin's jumper and a three by Vayda trimmed Clark's deficit to 29-27 with 6:07 remaining, but Trinity responded with back-to-back three's by Fels to take a 35-27 margin and held on for a 42-35 halftime edge.
Clark shot 56 percent (14-25) in the half to Trinity's 48.5 percent (16-33) clip.
Trinity increased its lead to as many as 23 (69-46) at the 7:33 mark of the second half. However, Clark made it interesting, mounting a 23-7 run capped by Vayda's trifecta to pull within eight (68-76) with 2:15 remaining. But thats as close as they would get.
Clark shot 38 percent for the game, while Trinity finished at a 53.7 percent clip.
Clark is off until next Wednesday when they travel to Coast Guard Academy (5:30 p.m.). Trinity will host Middlebury College in NESCAC action on Friday (7:30 p.m.).
