Men's Basketball Downs St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) in Catholic University Tournament
WASHINGTON 01/04/09 The Clark University men's basketball team downed St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn), 90-74, in the consolation game of the 2009 Catholic University/Residence Inn Greenbelt Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Junior Jack Minister (Manchester, England) led Clark (6-5) with 18 points. Senior Peter Normandin (Westminster, Mass.) chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds, while junior Mark Alexander (Providence, R.I.), who was named to the All-Tournament team, finished with eight assists.
St. Joe's (4-8) was paced by four players in double figures. Ervin Maddox had 24 points; Justin Gist scored 16 points; Przemyslaw Kudla notched 11 points, and Lucasz Klimaszewski finished with 10 points.
After holding a one-point deficit, Clark broke open the game with a 16-4 run featuring back-to-back trey's from Chris Lopiano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and Jonathan Phillips (Shrewsbury, Mass.) to lead 28-17 at the 10:12 mark. St. Joe's trimmed the Cougars' lead to seven on two occasions, but Clark answered knocking down a string of baskets in the final three minutes of the half to take a 49-34 halftime advantage.
Clark held its largest lead (73-51) of the game on a layin by Normandin with 6:54 remaining in the game, and held on for a 16-point win.
Clark connected on 12-of-24 three-pointers (50%) and shot 55 percent from the field, while holding a 35-31 advantage on the glass.
The Cougars will be back in action against Babson College in Babson Park, Mass. on Wednesday (5:30 p.m.).
