Men's Basketball Edged by Husson in Catholic University Tournament
WASHINGTON- A series of freethrows by Husson University's Blaine Meehan clinched a 76-70 win over Clark University at the CUA Residence Inn-Greenbelt Classic Saturday afternoon. With the win, Husson improves to 2-6 on the year, while Clark drops to 5-5.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead in the opening minutes of the game. A lay-up by Clark's Mark Alexander gave the Cougars their first lead with seven minutes left in the half. After exchanging back-and-forth buckets, Scott Kissinger hit to two freethrows to give the Eagles a two point edge over their opponent going into the locker room.
Husson's momentum carried on into the second half, as they increased their lead by as much as 8 points. Once again, the Cougars came charging back and grabbed a 59-57 advantage with 7:02 to play.
After four lead changes in the final minutes, Husson's Jay Urhin hit a jump shot to give the squad a one point edge. Three freethrows by Meehan iced the game for the Eagles, sealing the 76-70 victory.
Clark University's Alexander lead all scorers with 26 points, while teammate Slader Lyell added six points and 8 boards in the loss. Matt Mckenzie garnered 20 points and teammate Brock Bradford recorded 19 for Husson. The Eagles will take on the winner of the Catholic University/ St. Joe's (Brooklyn) at 4 p.m., Sunday, while the Cougars will play in the 2 p.m. consolation game.
