It’s that time again! Planning for Reunion 2009 is in full swing
and we need your help. Committees are forming now to help plan this
next reunion. Serving on your reunion committee is a great way to
get involved with Clark and get pumped up for reunion weekend in
May. You can help plan your class events, rally your classmates to
attend reunion, and shape the face of the weekend. If you are in a
class ending in 4 or 9, the anniversary of your graduation from
Clark is just around the corner. We hope you’ll plan to be on campus
May 15, 16 and 17 to celebrate this important time.
Interested in making a gift to Clark and preserving some of the
gains in your portfolio? Consider a charitable gift annuity. For as
little as $10,000, you can secure a lifetime of guaranteed income at an
attractive rate, avoid some of the capital gains taxes you would pay in
selling appreciated stock and receive a charitable tax deduction for
your gift—a win-win for both you and Clark University.

Geared to graduates
of Clark’s economics program, this newsletter aims to help economics
alumni keep in touch with what is going on in the department and
with fellow alumni. Read the most recent
newsletter online.
According to the Boston Globe, “Regulars are greeted with big smiles
and the occasional hug. Café Katja, an Austrian café nestled in the
Lower East Side, is like Cheers with an Austrian accent and
excellent liverwurst.” And it’s co-owned by European-trained chef
Andrew Chase ’83. So if you’re in the neighborhood and looking for a
great place for haute cuisine or sausages and sauerkraut, you might
want to stop by. Read the full review

Alumnus scholar of French literature and queer theory to
speak at Clark, Oct. 28
The Clark University Henry J. Leir Chair in Foreign
Languages and Cultures will present “Beautiful Boys:
Representing Gay Identity in Contemporary French Film,”
a talk by Lawrence Schehr ’75, professor of French,
comparative literature, gender and women’s studies and
Jewish studies at the University of Illinois-Urbana. Schehr will discuss the changing image of gays and
lesbians in French cinema today.
Schehr received his
B.A. at Clark and holds a Ph.D. in romance languages
from Johns Hopkins. Named a Chevalier de l'Ordre des
Palmes académiques in 2001, Schehr is also the author of
numerous books on French culture, sexuality and gender.
This free, public lecture will begin at 8 p.m., Tuesday,
Oct. 28, in Dana Commons, on Maywood St. For more
information, contact the Foreign Languages and
Literatures Department at 508-793-7234.
Demystifying the financial crisis of 2008
On Oct. 2, a panel discussion sponsored by
Clark’s Graduate School of Management addressed the current financial crisis and
the impact that its resolution will most certainly have on our individual and
collective futures. Panelists included Jim Collins, Clark's chief financial
officer; Clark finance professor Rich Spurgin; and Paul Szczygiel ’82,
M.B.A. ’88, award-winning investor at Babson Capital. Check out the
videotaped discussion at
Clark.
Reclaiming the common wealth
The Difficult Dialogues
fall 2008 symposium is raising the question of common wealth—what it is
that we all need and value, beneath our real and perceived differences—in a
series of public events. On Oct. 7, the Clark community examined the health of
the natural world in an event co-sponsored by the Mosakowski Institute for
Public Enterprise. A panel of Clark faculty engaged the audience in dialogue
about the politics of climate change, one of the most important issues that
America’s next President will confront, before watching the debate together on a
big-screen television. See what they had to say at
Clark.
No doubt politics are on most Americans’ minds this month, while they make final decision about for whom they will vote to be the next U.S. president. It’s a huge discussion in the media, and it’s a huge discussion at Clark.
Hungry for more food for thought? Then read what government and international relations professor Robert Boatright has to say in his recently published opinion editorial “Thinking about a Palin Presidency,” and be sure to check out the Clarknews feature in the fall issue, “New era of American politics,” where Boatright and colleagues examine the roles that race, gender, age, values, media, technology and financial strategy will play in this and future presidential elections.
Clark bloggers from abroad
This fall semester, Eugene Miculet ’10, Lauren Blake
’10, Max Miller ’10 and Kassie Pearson-Pomerantz have
taken their education abroad to London (Miculet and
Miller), Namibia (Blake) and Dijon, France (Pearson-Pomeranz).
We couldn’t go with them, so they agreed to share their
study-abroad experiences with the Clark community
through
online e-diaries.
