Plus signClark addresses tuition affordability with prospective students

No doubt, many worried about how today’s economic crisis will impact our financial future. These worries can be even greater for prospective college students, who may now be crossing private institutions like Clark off their college search lists in exchange for other seemingly less expensive options. President John Bassett addresses some of the common misconceptions about tuition costs in his recent letter to prospective students: “Clark promises to challenge YOU, not your financial future.”

Plus signAlumni return to campus for AIR

Alumni Affairs hosted the fifth-annual Alumni-In-Residence (AIR) Program on October 27-28. Twenty-four alumni, from a variety of industries, returned to campus to speak in classes, meet with small groups of students and participate in panel discussions, ultimately strengthening the vital connection between students and alumni. The eclectic mix of panels reached across disciplines and included “Careers in Government,” “Business and Economics,” and “What Can You Do with a Geography Major?” As one student remarked, “Alumni-In-Residence was a great opportunity to hear the stories of a number of alumni and made me appreciate how Clark will prepare me to be successful after graduation.”

Plus sign Alumni volunteers needed to interview applicants

This year’s Alumni and Parent Admissions Program (APAP) Interview Initiative is underway! From November through February, APAP alumni volunteers will help recruit qualified students to Clark by interviewing applicants. If you’re already an APAP volunteer, thank you for helping our applicants learn about the Clark experience in a very meaningful way.

Applicants are interviewed for admission as well as merit-based scholarship consideration. Last year, over 2,100 applicants were matched with alumni for interviews; despite this impressive number, we were unable to match over 1,000 applicants because we did not have enough interviewers in their areas.

If you had a good Clark experience and would be willing to share it with applicants, please consider joining APAP as an alumni interviewer. Alumni volunteers are needed around the globe and particularly in the areas listed below:

California—Los Angeles, San Diego, La Jolla, Albany, San Jose, Oakland, Marin County, San Mateo County, and surrounding areas

Connecticut—greater Hartford area, and New Haven and Fairfield counties

Florida—greater Miami/Miami Beach area, Fort Myers and Tampa area

Illinois—Rockford area, Chain of Lakes area, Northwest Suburbs, Western Suburbs, and Chicago

Massachusetts—Boston, eastern Massachusetts from north to south, and western Massachusetts

Maine—greater Portland Area, Lewiston, Augusta and Bangor

Minnesota—Minneapolis/St. Paul and surrounding areas

New Hampshire—Greater Nashua, Concord and Manchester areas

New Jersey—Northern Jersey and Princeton area

New York—five boroughs of NYC, Westchester County and Long Island

Oregon—Portland and surrounding areas

Pennsylvania—greater Philadelphia; Pittsburgh and surrounding areas

Vermont—Rutland area, Brattleboro, Putney and Montpelier Washington—Seattle and surrounding areas

Becoming an APAP member is a fun way to stay connected to Clark. To learn more about our program and activities visit www.clarku.edu/admissions/apap/joinapap.

Plus signIRA rollover renewed

Recently, legislation that allows the rollover of IRAs directly to charity was extended. Once again, if you are age 70 ½ or older you can transfer up to $100,000 directly from your traditional or Roth IRA to Clark University. These distributions to the University qualify towards your minimum required distribution, but are not included in taxable income. If you have questions or are interested in making a gift from your IRA, please call the Planned Giving Office toll free at 877-252-7510.

Plus signA gift to Clark that comes with guaranteed income

Despite tumultuous economic times, it is still possible to make a substantial gift to Clark and enhance your annual income. Consider a charitable gift annuity. For as little as $10,000 you can secure a life-time of guaranteed income at an attractive rate, avoid some of the capital gains taxes that you would pay in selling appreciated stock and receive a charitable tax deduction for your gift. It’s a win-win for you and Clark University.

If you would like to see how a gift annuity can benefit you and Clark, take advantage of our online gift calculator. It’s free and confidential. Just go to www.clarku.edu/advancement/pg and click on “GiftCalcs.” For more information, contact Dan Petrocelli, director of Planned Giving at 877-252-7510 or dpetrocelli@clarku.edu.
